(FOA)-Limited Submission – Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation – 2020 Moore Inventor Fellows; December 13, 2019

 

Purpose: The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation announces the 2020 Moore Inventor Fellows competition. Inspired by Gordon Moore’s passion for discovery, this competition seeks to identify outstanding early-stage inventors who harness science and technology solutions to enhance scientific research, strengthen environmental conservation, or improve the experience and outcomes of patient care. The program supports scientist-inventors at a critical stage of research to capture opportunities that otherwise might be missed. The foundation seeks to provide freedom and support early-career scientist-inventors who create new tools and technologies with a high potential to accelerate progress in the foundation’s areas of interest: scientific research, environmental conservation and patient care.

 

Eligibility: The competition is open to faculty and staff at eligible institutions. All candidates must be no more than 10 years past receiving their Ph.D., M.D., M.S. or other terminal degree. Fellows must be engaged in the pursuit of their invention at least 25 percent time for the three-year duration of the award.

 

Matching Requirement: $50,000/year in annual direct support of the inventor’s work. See the FAQs for specific guidance on the institution’s annual contribution.

 

Funding Amount/ Project Period: $675,000 over three years ($600,000 for the fellow and $75,000 for the home institution)

Internal Competition: To participate in the university’s selection process,please upload the following,assembled into a single PDF file, to the Office of the Vice President for Research via this portal with a copy to your Associate Dean for Research by October 8, 2019:

·         Names and departments or affiliations of the Project Director and other key personnel or partners;

·         Title of program and/or funding opportunity announcement number;

·         Brief project description (2 pages maximum)

·         Budget, including potential source of matching funds

·         Brief biographical sketch with clear indication of date of award of the terminal research degree

 

A committee will be convened to review the material and make a recommendation.
