(FOA)-Limited Submission – The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation – 2021 Beckman Scholars Program; June 15, 2020

Purpose: The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation invites applications for the Beckman Scholars Program. The purpose of the program is to provide an in-depth, sustained undergraduate research experience in chemistry, biochemistry, biological, and medical sciences, or some interdisciplinary combination of these subjects, for exceptionally talented, full-time undergraduate students at accredited U.S. four-year colleges and universities, young people who ultimately will become prominent leaders in their scientific and professional pursuits. The Program’s financial support for a student and mentor over 15 continuous months of research, in conjunction with the Annual Beckman Symposium, offers an academically stimulating and unique educational experience. The Beckman Scholars Program is an institutional award that supports up to six Beckman Scholars over a three-year period. Students will be named as Beckman Scholars in the spring of their freshman through junior year. Once selected to be a Beckman Scholar, a student will retain the award for 15 months, as long as he/she continues to excel academically and his/her research work shows satisfactory progress. Research activities performed by Beckman Scholars shall be conducted under the guidance of a full-time, approved faculty member at the college or university receiving an award. Funding covers student and mentor stipends and travel funds and research supplies extending over two summers and one academic year.

 

Eligibility: As this is an institutional award, eligible applicants are faculty members from the specified disciplines who will oversee the program.

 

Funding Amount/ Project Period: $26,000 per mentor/scholar pair; institutional award is up to 3 years

Internal Competition: To participate in the university’s selection process,please upload the following,assembled into a single PDF file, to the Office of the Vice President for Research via this portal with a copy to your Associate Dean for Research by March 31, 2020:

·         Names and departments or affiliations of the Project Director;

·         Title of program and/or funding opportunity announcement number;

·         Brief project description (2 pages maximum);

·         Brief biographical sketch of project director

 

A committee will be convened to review the material and make a recommendation.
