FUNDING-DOE/EERE
- Affordable and Sustainable Energy Crops (ASEC) Funding Opportunity
Announcement (DE‐FOA‐0001917); May 30, 2018
Agency
Department
of Energy – Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
(EERE)
Description
The
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable
Energy (EERE) announces a notice of availability of funds for financial
assistance to accelerate research and development related to the production of
affordable and sustainable non-food energy crops that can be used as feedstocks for the production of price-competitive
biofuels and bioproducts. Projects must focus
on newer, less studied varieties/cultivars of energy crops that have not been
extensively tested in the field. Applicants must propose research around
energy crop genotypes/cultivars/varieties that have been developed but have not
yet been brought into widespread commercial use due to a need for additional
evaluation and data collection. Applicants are strongly encouraged to use
traditionally‐bred and/or transgenic
varieties that have been commercially released since January 1, 2000, or are
still pre‐commercial.
This
FOA supports BETO’s main strategic goal of reducing the price of biofuels to
less than $3/gasoline gallon equivalent (gge) and
increasing the availability and affordability of biomass derived transportation
fuels and bioproducts. Projects selected under this
FOA will generate scientific information on new varieties/cultivars of energy
crops, specifically, the degree to which they show performance improvements
relative to better characterized predecessor
varieties,
how well adapted they are across regions, whether they may be more
cost‐effective to produce,
and whether they can be shown to be more sustainable relative to a check variety
and/or traditional cropping/pasture systems. A minimum 20% cost match is
required and must come from non‐Federal
sources.
