(FOA)-Community for Engineering Biology Research (DHS-ST-19-108-CBD-0001); July 29, 2019

Agency

Department of Homeland Security (DHS)

Description

Having a close relationship with the synthetic biology community would enable the government to keep abreast of the changes and impacts brought about by synthetic biology, so the government could assess the potential upsides and dangers resulting from synthetic biology processes.  As a result, DHS proposes to bring together a community of scientists, engineering developers, commercial companies, and end users to enable DHS to both understand the possible directions the synthetic biology community may take in the future, and also influence those directions.

Applicants are encouraged to develop proposals to help DHS S&T to build this community to bridge the divide between government and commercial industry. A successful Community for Engineering Biology Research proposal will:

include academic and industrial contacts and stakeholders from a range of biotechnology sectors, including commercial companies, educators, government agencies, and community leaders

demonstrate awareness of leading-edge advancements in synthetic biology

develop or access roadmaps by which gaps in technology and policy can be closed, with an eye to both government and commercial levers to close those gaps
