Description
The
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve
Results (STAR) program, aims to promote scientific progress towards preventing
and controlling harmful algal blooms (HABs) by seeking applications proposing
research to: (1) determine the effectiveness of existing nutrient treatment
technologies; (2) evaluate the scale-up of emerging nutrient treatment
technologies and develop new technologies; and (3) develop best management
practices to help both rural and urban communities control nutrients in their
watersheds. Institutional cost-sharing is not
required.
Applicants
should address at least one of the three research areas described below.
Applications may respond to one research area or integrate across two or three
research areas.

Area 1: Determine the effectiveness of existing nutrient treatment technologies
(including agriculture conservation practices and best management practices).

Area 2: Evaluate the scale-up of emerging nutrient treatment technologies
(including agriculture conservation practices and best management practices) and
develop new technologies.

Research
Area 3: Develop best management practices to help both rural and urban
communities control nutrients in their watersheds.
