FOA-National Priorities: Evaluation of Pollutants in Biosolids (EPA-G2021-ORD-F1); January 5, 2021

Agency

US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Description

Multiple data gaps exist related to the occurrence, fate and transport, and management of chemical pollutants found in wastewater biosolids. Given the uncertainty in the risks posed by these chemicals, and with an increased focus on resource recovery and water reuse, research is needed to identify, characterize and manage risks of chemical pollutants found in biosolids, particularly those that may persist and/or accumulate in soils and biota post application.

This National Priorities research request for applications (RFA) will solicit innovative research that advances understanding in these areas and will provide the best available science needed to support states, municipalities, and utilities in determining potential risk from chemical pollutants found in municipal biosolids and developing standards, methods, and policies to determine acceptable pollutant concentrations in biosolids management. The research should also help inform utilities and states of potential risks from known and emerging pollutants.

Research under this RFA is intended to address multiple treatment scales including large publicly-owned treatment works and medium- to small-scale wastewater treatment facilities and focuses on:

1.      fate and transport of chemical pollutants in biosolids, including following land application of biosolids;

2.      understanding the impact of different treatment processes and management practices on chemical pollutant levels in Class A biosolids and Class B biosolids; and

3.      development of cost effective methods to measure and manage chemical pollutants in biosolids.

A minimum 25% non-federal cost match is required.
