FUNDING-SENT ON BEHALF OF UK International Partnerships and Research -- DOS -- 2019-2020 Fulbright U.S. Scholar; March 9, 2018

Dear colleagues,

As you’ll see below, the Fulbright Scholar competition for AY 2019-20 is now open. The application deadline for most awards is August 1, 2018 (again, for planned travel and activities in Summer/Fall 2019 or Spring 2020). Please help me to disseminate this opportunity among faculty colleagues in your colleges. Fulbright supports a wide range of teaching, research and scholarly activities. It has evolved with several different types of opportunities in recent years, including “flex” grants that support multiple, shorter-term trips abroad, global flex grants that support trips and activities in multiple countries, and thematic, interdisciplinary awards on transnational issues/topics. Combined with the Fulbright Specialist program, which has a rolling deadline, these newer models for Fulbright go a long way towards dispelling the traditional notion that Fulbright awards are primarily for to support area studies scholars in social sciences and humanities, to conduct research abroad during sabbatical years (although that remains a prevalent use of the awards).

As you know, federal funding through a variety of mechanisms has been on the wane over the past few years—particularly through US Department of Education programs, but really across the board. The Fulbright program, administered by the US Department of State, is one of the few programs that has thus far been mostly immune to the budget axe. This year’s budget is expected to remain flat, with an appropriation equal to last year’s. In large part, this is due to the significant name recognition and goodwill that the Fulbright program has earned over 50+ years, and the fact that funds are often matched by the 49 Fulbright Commissions based outside the US, through the governments of the hosting countries.

Thanks very much for disseminating this wonderful opportunity as widely as possible. Note that there is an informational webinar scheduled for this Friday, March 9, ant 2:00. You can also direct faculty inquiries to me, of course. I’m happy to assist interested faculty by reading project statements, walking them through the application and review process/timeline, and facilitating connections with existing UK partner institutions abroad that may be interested in serving as host institutions. I can also connect them with some of the 50+ Fulbright alumni among our faculty who might have relevant experiences and insight to share.

Explore awards using our Catalog of Awards. Highlights from 465 awards offered in this year’s competition include:

Postdoctoral and Early Career Awards
Fulbright presents excellent opportunities for recently minted scholars to deepen their expertise, to acquire new skills, to work with additional resources and to make connections with others in their fields, all while serving as cultural ambassadors. Postdoctoral awards are available in all fields of study, from STEM, to the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Fulbright Flex Awards

Fulbright welcomes applications from scholars who propose multiple, short-term stays in the host country over a period of one to two years. The Flex option is available to scholars interested in research, teaching, or pursuing a combination of teaching and research. The catalog of awards will give detailed information on the Flex parameters for each participating country.

As a truly worldwide award, U.S. scholars will be able to propose research or combined teaching/research activity in two to three countries with flexible schedule options; trips can be conducted within one academic year or spread over two consecutive years. Projects are welcome in all disciplines, as well as those with an interdisciplinary focus.
