Funding-Limited Submission – Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program; November 9, 2015

 

Purpose: The purpose of the Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program is to support high-caliber scholarship in the social sciences and humanities, making it possible for the recipients to devote time to research and writing that applies fresh perspectives to some of the most pressing issues of our time.  The 2016 program will provide fellowships of $200,000 to up to thirty-two exceptional scholars, journalists, and public intellectuals whose work addresses urgent challenges to U.S. democracy and international order.

 

Institutional Limit:  2 – One junior (maximum of 10 years out from Ph.D. – 2005-2015) and one senior scholar from full-time faculty, who are U.S. citizens or have permanent U.S. residency status.

Internal Competition:  To participate in the University’s selection process, researchers are to submit the following information assembled into a single PDF attachment to Ms. Kristine Hobson (hobson@uky.edu), Office of the Provost, and a copy to their Dean by noon on Monday, November 9, 2015:

·         Candidate’s name and primary department

·         Category- Senior or Junior Scholar (terminal degree within last ten years)

·         Project summary (2 pages maximum) that describes the project and work plan

·         Curriculum vitae

·         Confirmation from the chair and/or dean that the candidate’s faculty appointment and salary will not be negatively impacted by the fellowship if awarded

·         Nomination letter from the department chair, co-signed by the dean, that describes the candidate’s qualifications and potential and describes how his/her contributions will address current and future challenges to U.S. democracy or international order

 

A committee will be appointed to review the proposals and make recommendations.  The two applications that are chosen will be prepared online and submitted electronically along with the required letter of nomination from President Capilouto.  The Office of the Provost is coordinating the preparation of the letter and application submission with Dr. Capilouto’s office.  Carnegie Foundation Deadline: November 19, 2015.

 

Important note from the sponsor guidelines:  The Carnegie Foundation draws attention to the fact that all funds will be awarded directly to the individual and not to his or her institution.  Nominees should be aware that there may be tax implications associated with the award.  Nominations from colleges and universities: Nominations must be approved by the president and cleared by the dean’s office.  In nominating a scholar for the fellowship, the institution is expressly indicating that it fully supports the nominee.  If the nominee is chosen, the institution agrees to make certain that he or she suffers no adverse financial or other consequences as a result, including but not limited to, loss or suspension of health or retirement benefits.  NO indirect/overhead costs will be allowed or paid to the university; the successful nominee shall receive the entire fellowship for support of his/her research project.  Finally, in accepting his or her institution’s nomination, the candidate is affirming that, if chosen for a fellowship, he/she will accept.
