Funding-Limited Submission – NSF - Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship Program-CIF21 Track (IGERT-CIF21); May 10, 2012

Description: The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program has been developed to meet the challenges of educating U.S. Ph.D. scientists and engineers with interdisciplinary backgrounds, deep knowledge in chosen disciplines, and technical, professional, and personal skills. Through this amendment to the IGERT solicitation NSF 11-533, a new IGERT-CIF21 track has been created as a mechanism to address the training and education needs in CDS&E and cyberinfrastructure research.

Proposals submitted to the IGERT-CIF21 track must describe integrative, research-based, graduate education and training activities in emerging areas of science and engineering, and must address the training and education needs in computational and data enabled science and engineering (CDS&E) and cyberinfrastructure research.

Program Solicitation: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2012/nsf12555/nsf12555.htm?WT.mc_id=USNSF_25&WT.mc_ev=click

Institutional Limit: Institutions are allowed to submit at most one proposal in response to this IGERT-CIF21 track solicitation, which can be in addition to one regular IGERT proposal submitted in response to NSF 11-533.

Internal Competition: Because NSF limits an institution to only 1 (IGERT-CIF21) proposal, UK has established an internal selection process.  Prospective applicants are to submit the following information electronically to Kris Hobson (hobson@email.uky.edu), Office of the Provost, and a copy to their dean by Thursday, May 10, 2012:

·         Title of Project

·         Names and departments of the PI and participating personnel

·         Project description (1-2 pages) - include the vision and goals of the proposed training program, the interdisciplinary theme, and a brief overview of the graduate education and training mechanisms that are central to the project.

A committee will be convened to review the proposals and make a recommendation. The Office of the Provost will notify all applicants of the outcome.

NSF Deadlines: June 4, 2012 Letter of Intent (required); August 6, 2012 full proposal
