Executive Summary
- Purpose. This Funding Opportunity
Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Institute of Allergy and
Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH), invites
applications for early stage product development projects to establish
proof-of-concept for potential next generation diagnostics products that
do not involve nucleic acid amplification.
- Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the R01
award mechanism.
- Funds Available and Anticipated
Number of Awards. The NIAID intends to commit $9 million in total costs in FY2011 to
fund 7 to 10 applications in response to this FOA.
- Budget and Project Period. Budgets for direct costs of up to
$750,000 per year and a project duration of 5
years may be requested. Applicants requesting budgets in excess of
$750,000 in direct costs in any given year must receive approval from the
NIAID Program Officer prior to submission.
- Application Research Strategy
Length: The R01
Research Strategy section may not exceed 12 pages, including tables,

- Eligible
Institutions/Organizations. Institutions/organizations listed in Section
III, 1.A. are eligible to apply.
- Eligible Project
Directors/Principal Investigators (PDs/PIs). Individuals with the skills,
knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research are
invited to work with their institution/ organization to develop an
application for support. Individuals from underrepresented racial and
ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always
encouraged to apply for NIH support.
- Number of PDs/PIs. More than one PD/PI (i.e.,
multiple PDs/PIs) may be designated on the application.
- Number of Applications. Applicants may submit more than
one application, provided each application is scientifically distinct.
- Resubmissions. Resubmission applications are not
permitted in response to this FOA.
- Renewals. Renewal applications are not
permitted in response to this FOA.
- Special Date(s). This FOA uses non-standard due dates.
