Funding-Assessment of
Appalachian Natural Assets: Forests; August 20,
2010
Agency
Appalachian
Regional Commission
Description
The
wood and forest products industry is making a vital contribution to sustainable
economic growth in the Appalachian Region. The emerging biofuels
and renewable energy industry offers the potential to preserve and expand jobs
in forest products, if the required biomass resources can be harvested in an
economically and environmentally sustainable way. This study would update
existing inventories of forest assets; assess their quantity, quality, value,
accessibility, and use; analyze their potential contribution to economic
development in the Region; and create a framework for planning their best use.
The sustainability assessment would look closely at forest growth and
harvesting patterns, the increasing competition for biomass resources in the
Region, and the full life cycle environmental impacts of biomass production and
collection.
