Funding-Limited Submission - NSF Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring; January 15, 2010

The NSF Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) Program seeks to identify outstanding mentoring efforts that enhance the participation of groups (i.e., women, minorities, and persons with disabilities) that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The awardees serve as leaders in the national effort to develop fully the Nation's human resources in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The proposed nominee must be a U.S. citizen; must have affiliation with an organization eligible to be an NSF awardee; must not be a Federal government employee; must have demonstrated outstanding and sustained mentoring and effective guidance to a significant number of underrepresented students at the K-12, undergraduate, or graduate education levels for at least five years.

Guidelines and abstracts of recent awards through the PAESMEM program are available at:  http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5473

Because NSF limits an institution to one nomination, the University of Kentucky has established an internal selection process. Anyone wishing to nominate a candidate should submit the following information electronically to Ms. Kristine Hobson (hobson@email.uky.edu), Office of the Provost, and a copy to their Dean by Friday, January 15, 2010:

o    Name and department of the nominator and the candidate being nominated for the award

o    CV of the candidate

o    Statement about the candidate’s specific mentoring activities that contribute to the success of the students mentored and the sustained achievements in mentoring underrepresented students; provide details that support the rationale for the candidate being selected as UK’s applicant for the award (maximum 2 pages)

A committee will be convened to review the nominations, make a recommendation, and the Office of the Provost will notify all applicants of the outcome. The complete nomination packet submitted via FastLane is due March 2, 2010
