Description

The Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) is a partnership of six federal wildland fire management and research agencies that have a shared need to address problems associated with managing wildland fuels, fires, and fire-impacted ecosystems. For further background on the JFSP, those considering submitting proposals are encouraged to visit its website at www.firescience.gov.

The JFSP prioritizes and provides sound scientific studies to support the land management agencies and other stakeholders in addressing issues associated with wildland fire. Current research objectives for this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) are to: (1) identify or develop metrics (standards) to assess fuel break and fuel break system performance in terms of controlling wildfire behavior, aiding in wildfire suppression operations, and minimizing wildfire risk and impacts to valued resources (2) evaluate fuel breaks and fuel break systems using these metrics, and (3) identify necessary improvements in the implementation of operational fire behavior models and their data input requirements relative to assessing fuel break and fuel break system performance. Proposers must address both research needs 1 and 2 below to be considered responsive. Research need 3 is optional.
