Description

OMH and the President’s Council on Sports Fitness and Nutrition will collaborate to develop and implement the YES initiative in support of Executive Order 13265 to increase children’s participation in youth sports.  The YES initiative will support collaborative partnerships, led by Institutions of Higher Education, that include: community recreation groups, sports organizations, public health entities, local schools, technology/media entities, police athletic leagues, and parents.  The partnerships will develop and implement sports clubs and/or leagues for children and youth. The sports clubs/leagues will be inclusive and ensure opportunities for participation by children and youth who may: have physical disabilities; be clinically obese or overweight; be of average or below average ability; and/or have a low-income household.  This initiative is expected to result in: improvement in physical literacy among participating children and youth; decrease in number of children and youth that are overweight/obese; achievement of national sports, fitness and nutrition goals; increased developmental assets; improved academic performance; increased engagement of community members, including parents/family members; and, integrated community level sports/fitness programs.
