ANNOUNCEMENT-NASA --SPACE STEM FORUM (SNOTE); August 11, 2018

Agency

National Aeronautics and Space Administration

Description

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Headquarters Office of Education seeks to facilitate, through dialogue with organizations with strong Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) components, the enhancement of our students to understand and engage in STEM and enjoy the meaning of our nation's space program as part of the upcoming 50th anniversary of the first Apollo moon landing (July 20, 2019). To the extent that organizations that have strong STEM components and are making plans to recognize the first Apollo moon landing, as is NASA, there is an opportunity to share ideas and maximize our collective efficiency and impact on students across the U.S. regarding space exploration. The purpose is to identify opportunities to collaborate and leverage our individual STEM engagement activities and efforts. The Space STEM Forum will be held on September 19, 2018 in Washington D.C. at NASA Headquarters.

If interested in participating in this Space STEM Forum, please submit a short abstract no later than August 11, 2018, as described in the supplemental information. Details about the criteria that will be used for selection of participants at the Forum are also included in the supplemental information. In your cover submission letter, you may also include information (no more than 550 words) about past STEM programs at your organization that successfully disseminated information to students about space exploration on a national level, and preferably including any underserved communities, which may be illustrative of successful approaches to STEM engagement or education. Please do not include any proprietary information in what you provide to NASA, as the Agency plans to share ideas broadly within the STEM community. Preference will be given to those organizations with plans that have the greatest national impact, and also have made a demonstrable contribution to NASA-related STEM programs in the past.

Participation will be limited, due to the immediacy of the anniversary and the need to be efficient. Only one or two representatives from the selected organizations may attend. Meeting notes from the STEM Forum will be posted on the NASA Education website, so that those who are not able to participate in the Forum will have the benefit of the information shared at that time. This announcement is not related to anticipated contracts, grants, cooperative agreements or Space Act Agreements. This is not a solicitation, nor is it associated with a future solicitation. NASA will not pay for any information received, nor seeks to receive any information that is considered proprietary.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: The Space STEM Forum will feature plenary session information briefings by NASA officials on the Agency's position on space STEM engagement, NASA anniversary plans for students and highlight appropriate successful STEM programs and future STEM plans. The plenary session will subsequently breakout into focused work group discussion between the participants. The breakout working sessions will focus on: (1) Identification of opportunities to collaborate and (2) Formulation of strategies to capitalize on identified opportunities. Criteria for attendance (must meet at least three of these four listed criteria):

1) Demonstrable contribution to NASA-related STEM, nationally

2) Broad organizational plans for NASA anniversary related STEM activities

3) A senior manager from a top 30 organization from the aerospace industry in the U.S, a professional organization, or a nonprofit organization with a space STEM component.

4) Invited NASA awardee senior manager whose organization has regional or national plans for NASA/Apollo anniversary related STEM activities or events.
