FOA-Limited Submission – Searle Funds – 2021 Searle Scholars Program; August 4, 2020

 

Purpose: The 2021 Searle Scholars Program invites the nomination of an outstanding early-career scientist with potential to make innovation and high-impact contributions to research over an extended period of time. Searle’s sole selection criterion is scientific merit. Applicants pursuing independent research careers in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine, and the biological sciences are eligible. The Searle Scholars Program does not ordinarily support purely clinical research but has supported research programs that include both clinical and basic components. Potential applicants who are unsure if their research is appropriate for the Searle Scholars Program are encouraged to examine the research interests of present and former Searle Scholars on the website (http://www.searlescholars.net/).

 

Eligibility: Applicants should have begun their appointment as an independent investigator at the assistant professor level on or after July 1, 2019. The appointment must be the applicant’s first tenure-track position at an invited institution. The University of Kentucky is an invited institution.

 

Funding Amount/ Project Period: $100,000 per year for 3 years

Internal Competition: To participate in the university’s selection process,please submit the following, assembled into a single PDF file, to the Office of the Vice President for Research via this portal with a copy to your Associate Dean for Researchby August 4, 2020:

·        Name, department, and complete curriculum vitae of the candidate;

·        Title of program and/or funding opportunity announcement number;

·        Title of the candidate’s proposed research and an abstract which describes the research and its scientific merit, including the potential of the applicant to make innovative and high-impact contributions to research over an extended period of time (250 words);

·        Letter of support from the department chair confirming eligibility and addressing the scientific merit of the project and potential of the applicant to make high-impact contributions;

·        Brief biographical sketch, indicating date of appointment as an assistant professor in a tenure-track position.

 

A committee will be convened to review the material and make a recommendation.
