Symposium-UK
Center for Ecology, Evolution and Behavior Spring Symposium, May 13-14 2010
The Center for Ecology, Evolution and Behavior, the Department of Entomology
and the Department of Biology at the University of Kentucky are proud to
announce our 9th annual Spring Symposium in Ecology,
Evolution and Behavior on May 13-14, 2010
(Thursday-Friday), at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY (see http://www.uky.edu/~cfox/CEEB/CEEB_symposium
for information on previous years). The objectives of the symposium are to (1)
increase interaction among departments on campus and between local
colleges/universities, (2) educate the UK community about the research programs
that surround them, and (3) provide a forum at which graduate students can
practice their presentations for upcoming summer meetings.
Each day we have slots for about twenty 15 minute seminars plus two key-note
seminars by visiting scientists. Keynote speakers this year include Greg Grether (UCLA), Dan Heath (University of
Windsor), John Jaenike (University of
Rochester), and Heather Reynolds
(Indiana University). Links to the keynote speakers’ web pages are
included at the bottom of this email.
The entire event is free and lunch will be provided
free of charge to all participants thanks to the support of our UK
sponsors, including the Department of Entomology, the Department of Biology,
the College of Agriculture, and the Tracy Farmer Institute for Sustainability
and the Environment.
The symposium is open to anyone who wishes to attend. Slots for
presentations are available to all students, post-docs or faculty from UK or
the surrounding community. We especially encourage
students from neighboring colleges and universities to attend and/or present at
this symposium. Faculty are also welcome to present seminars (and we
have always had time for some faculty talks), but priority will be given to
students and post-docs.
This event has been well attended the past eight years, including numerous
attendees from the University of Louisville, University of Cincinnati, Kentucky
State University, Berea College, Centre College, Eastern Kentucky University
and Transylvania University. Please encourage your colleagues at other local colleges to also attend and present talks on
their research.
Visiting students, post-docs or faculty that require housing for Thursday night
can stay with UK graduate students or faculty (as space permits; please contact
me if you need such arrangements).
For further information, or to reserve a slot for a presentation, please
contact Jen White at jenawhite@uky.edu,
859-257-6693. If you can only attend on one of the two days you should indicate
this in your e-mail so that you can reserve a presentation slot on that
specific day.
As in previous years we have enough financial support to bring in multiple
outside speakers (keynote speakers). Our keynote speakers in all previous years
gave outstanding talks and generated enthusiastic discussion. I expect this
year’s speakers to be equally exciting.
Please post this advertisement and circulate it to appropriate listservs and students/faculty at surrounding colleges.
