FUNDING-Limited Submission - USDA/NIFA - Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) - Education and Workforce Development (USDA-NIFA-AFRI-006555); June 28, 2018

 

Purpose:  The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) announces the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) - Education and Workforce Development (EWD)Program (formerly the Food, Agriculture, Natural Resources and Human Sciences Education and Literacy Initiative, or ELI). The AFRI EWD focuses on developing the next generation of research, education, and extension professionals in the food and agricultural sciences. In FY 2018, EWD invites applications in four areas, only two of which are limited:professional development opportunities for K-14 teachers and education professionals (PD-STEP); training of undergraduate students in research and extension (REEU); fellowships for predoctoral candidates; and fellowships for postdoctoral scholars. Due dates vary by program.

 

Note: there is no limit for the predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships.

 

Matching Funds: 1:1 match only if a project is commodity-specific and not of national scope

 

Funding Amount/Project Period:   

1.        Professional Development for Secondary School Teachers and Educational Professionals (PD-STEP) - up to $150,000 total per project for up to 3 years

2.        Research and Extension Experiences for Undergraduates (REEU) - up to $500,000 total per project for up to 5 years  

3.        Predoctoral Fellowships - $120,000 total per project for 2 years

4.        Postdoctoral Fellowships - $165,000 total per project for 2 years

Institutional Limit: 3 proposals each for the PD-STEP and REEU program areas only

 

Internal Competition: To participate in the university’s selection process,please upload the following,assembled into a single PDF file, to the Office of the Vice President for Research via this portal with a copy to your Associate Dean for Research by May 22, 2018:

 

• Names and departments or affiliations of the Project Director and other key personnel or partners;
• Title of program and/or funding opportunity announcement number;
• Intent to submit to either the PD-STEP or REEU program area
• Brief project description (2 pages maximum)
• Amount of total budget request and project period, including source of matching funds, if applicable (commodity-specific projects)

 

A committee will be convened to review the material and make a recommendation.
