Description
The
U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service
(NRCS) announced “Underground Agricultural Waste Management Tank Design”,
(USDA-NRCS-RI-CTA-18-002). The overarching goal of this cooperative
effort is to maximize the application of NRCS program funding to address Rhode
Island's resource concerns and improve watershed health and ecology by
implementing best animal waste management practices. The project is for
the design of a slurry swine waste management system consisting of a partially
slatted floor and underground storage tank that will capture and store swine
waste. The waste subsequently recycles nutrients and organic matter via land
application. Benefits include pollution reduction by waste containment and
management, improving crop productivity and yields, soil health and tilth by increasing nutrients, micronutrients, and organic
matter content while reducing imported commercial fertilizer and associated
costs. The object of this project is to produce “ready for construction”
documents that, when implemented, will improve control of soil erosion, and
protect air and water quality: these items are the keys to watershed
health. The total amount of funding available is
$60,000.
